Welcome to the Gallery area of the Astronomy Forum
This area of the forum is intended as a display case for the variety of astronomical images taken by members of the SPA Forum. Whilst it's great to read about people's observing experiences, it's true to say that 'a picture paints a thousand words'. Contributions are welcomed from people of all levels of experience, from beginner to expert, and using a range of astronomical equipment and imaging techniques. So it could be you're submitting a picture of the night sky captured using ordinary photographic film with a Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera, through to detailed images taken using sophisticated Charge Coupled Devices (CCD) connected to a telescope. This part of the forum isn't just limited to photographs or digital images, if you're able to draw what you see at the eyepiece, and have the capability to scan those drawings into an electronic format, then it would be wonderful to see those too. The greater the diversity of images the better.
You are welcome to post images here yourself assuming you have your own personal web space from where your images can be made accessible, or use the SPA's own Album facility. If you are unfamiliar with the different types of image file suitable for web use, Robin Scagell has provided a short tutorial on the subject. Images can be included in your message post by enclosing the full web address, where the image is stored, in between and [/img] tags.
If you do post images yourself then please observe the following guidelines:
1. Keep the size of the image to no more than 55Kb. This is to ensure that they don't take too long to display on screen for people using 56K dial-up connections. You can always include an appropriately labelled link to higher resolution images, if you prefer.
2. Link directly to your image, rather than providing a general link to the front page or the gallery section of your own website. If your link initiates any inappropriate pop-up ads then your post will be removed.
3. Before clicking the Submit button, to post your image on the forum, please use the Preview facility to check the contents of your post. Previewing the post will show you exactly how your post will appear on the live forum, and will enable you to check that the link to your image is working correctly. If you have specified any additional internet links in your post, then please check these from within the preview facility (it's very easy to mis-type a link) to ensure that they connect to the site(s) you intended.
The other aim is for us all to be able to learn from the experience of others in capturing astronomical images, so please ensure that you also post as much detail as possible relating to how the picture was taken. A suggested format would be:
Image credited to
Subject captured, e.g. constellation, star cluster, planetary or lunar feature etc.
Astronomical equipment used, e.g. type of telescope, focal length, aperture
Imaging equipment used, e.g. type of camera, film, CCD, web camera
Duration of exposure
Any additional image processing (e.g. using RegiStax, Photoshop etc.)
Date and time the image was taken
Location where the image was taken
Constructive comments or questions to the posts are welcome, but please ensure that they are relevant to the post. The idea is for us all to be able to see the types of images that can be produced using various techniques and equipment, and of course it serves as a place where we can come and observe something when the clouds have rolled in!
Regards,
Astro
